Hanakogen
A moment to unwind in the city.
Hanakogen in Kita-Senju serves seasonal Kyoto cuisine, showcasing fresh seafood shipped directly from Ine, freshly fried tempura, and unryu tofu across lunch set trays and evening tasting courses in a calm setting with counter and semi-private seating.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At lunchtime, the signature Hanakogen Gozen offers a thoroughly satisfying spread, combining fresh sashimi sent directly from the fishing port of Ine in Kyoto with crisp, seasonal tempura. In early spring, freshly fried bites might include pleasantly bitter butterbur sprouts (fukinoto), presented alongside delicate appetizers and a small dish of unryu tofu, crafted by patiently blending black and white sesame seeds into a smooth paste.
In the evening, guests can choose from 3 course formats or simply relax with a la carte dishes paired with sake. Feasting through hassun seasonal bites, sashimi platters, monkfish liver (ankimo), grilled fish, and light, expertly fried tempura makes for a memorable night, complemented by Heartland draft beer or well-matched chilled sakes. Diners finish their course on a sweet note with house-made, chewy fresh yatsuhashi paired with a bowl of whisked matcha.
The dining room features counter seats offering a front-row view of the chef's precise knife work, alongside semi-private table areas accommodating up to 6 guests. It serves equally well for an elevated everyday meal, an unhurried family lunch with children, or celebratory gatherings like betrothal meet-and-greets where an intimate, tranquil setting is appreciated.
